How David secured an intergenerational blessings
Posted on April 4th, 2025 by RedeemedAfter the king was settled in his palace and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.”
2 Samuel 7: 1- 2.
It's interesting to see how David lived out his life before the LORD.
From when the prophet Samuel was sent to go and anoint him as king till when he came to the throne.
David wandered from place to place running away from Saul who sought to take his life on account of the promise of God on his life.
Even though Saul's life on two occasions was at the mercies of David, he would not lay hands on him because of God's anointing that was once on Saul's life - Scriptures says, touch not my anointed and do my prophets no harm.
David understood the working of God's Word and he made every effort to align himself with the Word of God.
David allowed God to deal with Saul in his time and on several occasions told Saul he meant him no harm as such Saul need not be afraid of him, but Saul was bent on destroying David.
In the cause of time, God took care of Saul and David became king as God had promised. He also gave him rest from all his enemies.
David was now settled and built himself a beautiful palace in the city of David. He also brought up the Ark of God from the house of Abinadab to set in its place in the city of David but because of the way they went about it Uzzah lost his life.
David was so afraid of the LORD because he thought himself unworthy for the Ark to come to his house such that he set up the Ark of God in the house of Obed-Edom.
Wherever the Presence of God is there is order. God blessed Obed-Edom and all he had and David was told, "the LORD has blessed Obed-Edom and his entire household".
So David went and took the Ark of God from the house Obed-Edom to the city of David and set it in the tent built for the Ark.
Whilst the Ark was set up in the house of Obed-Edom Scriptures said, David after bringing the Ark from Obed-Edom house, set up the Ark in a tent.
One day, David summoned the prophet Nathan and said to him,
“Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.”
2 Samuel 7: 2.
He wanted to build a befitting house for the LORD'S Ark just as he was dwelling in a beautiful house.
This was very pleasing to the LORD and that night the LORD sent His prophet Nathan to deliver a message and a promise to David, one that will affect not just him but his generation and God's people forever!
When you build something for God, He builds something greater for you. No one can out-give God.
God said something that was quite interesting and shocking.
He told Nathan to tell David,
I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling. 2 Samuel 7: 6.
I have read this particular verse over and over before now, but I felt so sad after reading it today knowing we have been very unkind and unthinking about His Person.
God does feel. He has feelings of love, anger, etc just like we do, since we are created in His image and likeness - only that He is long-suffering and can be patience with us for long.
We have thought only of ourselves with no thought for how God feels.
I realised that God has a heart, and feels hurt too. Most times we assumed because He is all Powerful and unmovable, He has no feelings and we need not bother about what we do, after all He is God.
When God makes you a promise, He is there with you, going through what you are going through to see that you arrive at the promised destination.
So it becomes the betrayal of the highest kind, when after you have received the promise turn your back on Him.
This simply brings to the fore what God goes through to bring you that promise, that prayer answered. And we complain so much when He is busy working out things for us!
God, the One who dwells in the highest heavens and the earth His footstool, dwelt in tents for the sake of Isreal his people. What a wonder!
This simply makes me love Him the more.
But now, this is what the Lord says— he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. Isaiah 43: 1.
David, after He got the kingship remained humbled and obedient before God.
He made mistakes no doubt, like many of us, but is quick to repent when confronted with his errors.
How are we showing appreciation for all He has done?
Are we still loving and obeying Him as we used to or we have become too busy for Him.
David after he had made his intentions known to Nathan, got a go ahead word from Nathan but God had other plans.
That night the word of the LORD came to Nathan for David.
“Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth. And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies. “ ‘The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself will establish a house for you: When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 2 Samuel 7: 8 - 13.
When God deals with a ruler, He always have His people in mind.
For the sake of His people, He searched for a man that fears Him, who would lead in fairness and justice and would not oppress His people.
In pronouncing a blessing on David, He first of all promised to established His people by planting them in a place of their own, and then promised David a house and a throne forever.
David's offspring, one born to him would be the one to build Him a house (temple) the LORD said to Nathan.
A simple show of genuine love for God delivered to David and his descendants an everlasting heritage and a throne forever.
God bless as we reflect on how we have treated God.
Have we been fair in our dealings with Him?
If not, it's not too late to retrace our steps and change for the best.
God bless.
Shalom!
