The Power and the Glory of God’s name

The Power and the Glory of God’s name

Posted on January 29th, 2023 by Redeemed

Exodus 34:5-6

5 And the Lord descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord.

6 And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, …

Anytime I read the above verses, my heart is filled with gratitude for the Person of God.

His name can be relied on. Powerful, Mighty, Glorious and Gracious.

His name is a mighty tower, the righteous runneth into it and are saved. Proverb 18: 10

Moses had prayed God to show him His glory, and this conversation ensued between God and Moses;

Exodus 33:17-18

17 And the Lord said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.

18 And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.

The LORD was speaking with Moses in a Form that He has never spoken with any after the fall.

At Mount Sinai the glory of the LORD rub off on Moses when he spent 40 days in the Presence of the LORD as the LORD wrote for him the Law, such that Moses’s face shown, and the Israelites were afraid of coming near Moses.

Moses came from the Mountain of God and saw the Israelites had turned their back on God. The LORDS’ anger burned against them.

And God told Moses He wasn’t going with them as they journeyed to the land He had promised them least He destroyed them because of their stubbornness.

Moses tactically requested for God to show him His Glory since he had found favour with God. The LORD honoured his request. His glory passed before Moses as can be seen from the below verse.

Exodus 34:6-8

6 And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, 7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty ; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation. 8 And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped.

The attributes of God are revealed in the revelation of His Names; we can plea our case before God referencing His attributes even as Moses did in the proceedings verses;

Exodus 34:9 And he said, If now I have found grace in thy sight, O Lord, let my Lord, I pray thee, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance.

Moses acknowledging their stubbornness and referencing the attribute of God being a merciful God asked Him to show them mercy and not take His Presence from amongst them. And the LORD honoured his prayer since He cannot deny Himself. And the LORD said;

Exodus 34:10 And he said, Behold, I make a covenant: before all thy people I will do marvels, such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation: and all the people among which thou art shall see the work of the Lord : for it is a terrible thing that I will do with thee.

Though Isreal’s conducts deserved judgement but Moses understanding the mercies of God, was able to plea their case; and Isreal secured the covenant of provision and protection instead of judgement.

We too can plea out our case asking Him to honor His revelation of His Person and His Word.

The Lord said in Isaiah 45:11

Thus saith the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me.

We can trust God to keep His Word when we ask Him and remind Him of what He has revealed about Himself as recorded in His Word.

God bless. Peace.

Bible Quotes

And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick; and they shall recover.
